Walk into any bookstore in any town in the USA and you are sure to find and entire section of books dedicated to the idea of self-transformation. Every night television programing runs hours of weight-loss products, exercise programs and other elixirs promising transformative results to those who utilize their products. What is the message that is being conveyed? “You need to change your life,” they communicate, “and this product will transform your life for the better.”
Books continue to be written, the products developed, and the infomercial pitches are still going strong, it is obvious that we live in a culture that is looking to transform themselves. The Bible has much to say regarding transformation. In fact, the Bible is explicitly clear on where all transformation originate.
Romans 12:2 – Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. In other words, transformation begins with a changing of how we think. All actions can be traced to choices we make based on thought processes of our mind. If we are going to change the way we are, we have to first change the way we think. Here are three ways to begin a mental transformation.
1. Read the Bible daily.
There is no substitute for reading the Bible daily. To renew our minds means we change the information our mind uses to navigate the decision process of our brain. When we spend time with God’s word, we are opening our hearts and minds to the Spirit of God to come in and reprogram our minds according to His thoughts, ways, desires and truth.
2. Memorize Key Passages
Through out my journey of personal transformation, several scriptures have become instrumental in my changed thought pattern. David said, “I have hidden (memorized) your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” (Psalm 119:11). When we memorize the scriptures it allows us to constantly think on them over and over with ease and to pull them up when we are fighting through those processes of the mind in order to reach the desired outcome. Even Jesus, when faced with temptation, utilized memorized scripture in order to win those encounters. Memorize the Word!
3. Embrace The Spirit of God
The Word and the Sprit are the key to a transformed life. The Bible teaches that we are not even saved if we are not being led by the Spirit. “For those who are
led by the Spirit ARE the children of God.” (Romans 8:14) This is vitally important because the Spirit combined with the Word is the key to changing our lives. “So I say walk by the Spirit and you will not
fulfill the desires of the flesh.” (Galatians 5:16).
God wants you to become all He has created you to be. Here are three great steps to begin your journey.
